Ore-dinary: A Legend Of Korra Fan fic

A/N: This is a divergent fic from The Legend of Korra canon, this splits off during the events of episodes two. The fic does have OC characters, no shipping and non-planned.

Synopsis:

Korra escapes from Air temple island only to be caught by a young metalbender named, Tai. Tai is willing to let her off, if she has dinner with him. Korra reluctantly agrees and finds out that a romantic relationship is the farthest thing from Tai's mind.

Disclaimer: I do not own anything, I'm just a fan writing a fanfiction of something I love. Legend of Korra is owned by it's creators, Nickelodeon and Viacom.

                                        ---

Korra looked back and forth outside her window, she waited for one of the White Lotus sentries to turn around and walk away. She dove from the window and landed softly into a patch of darkness away from their lanterns. She quickly ran and launched herself off the edge of a nearby cliff, bending the water up to catch her.

She swam away from Air Temple Island and toward the city, after a few minutes she surfaced near the edge of the city. She looked for an opening at the arena but saw no open windows so she swam along the docks for a few minutes and dove out of the water and on to drier land, doing a quick twirl to dry off as she landed. She was in a dimly lit area of the stone docks which were just a few blocks from the arena. She quickly darted her head back and forth, and saw nobody that looked like a metalbender or White Lotus sentry.

"Phew," Korra sighed and casually strolled down the road. She closed her eyes as she walked, and didn't notice the young black haired man turning the corner. They collided.

"Hey, Watch where you're going," Korra said and then looked up at the young armored metalbender standing in front of her, "Oh crap."

"Hey, you're the Avatar aren't you." The man said, smiling though Korra was too frightening to notice.

"Ya, and I'm arrested...again" She sighed turning her head down, away from the pale young man's gaze and placed her hands up to be cuffed.

"Relax, I'm not going to turn you in." The young man said gently pushing her right hand now with his the tips of his fingers.

"Really?!" Korra said looking up into his almond-shaped and colored eyes.

"One condition." The man raised his finger, with a coy smile on his face.

"Name it!" Korra pulled her arms in close still excited that she was getting off.

"Let me take you out to dinner." The man said Korra's hands fell down in disappointment, as she sighed.

"You might as well just arrest me now."  Korra raised her hands back up to have the cuffs put on.

"I'm not asking for a date. I need to ask you a few questions and I figured you'd like to answer them more over a warm, free meal, than at the station." The young man scratched behind his ear embarrassed.

Korra looked up at him, his face half illuminated by city light and the other half masked in shadows. "I'm not sure I can trust him at his word, but it's better than jail." She thought to herself.

"Fine, we'll go out to dinner and ... talk." Korra rose her head back up and said in a smug tone.

The man smiled wide. "By the way, The names Tai."

"Korra."

                                            ---

Korra sat across from Tai, bored. She obviously didn't want to be there, one arm over the chair leaning away from him waiting for their food to arrive, just so that she could get this over with. The restaurant was huge and had red and gold banners running down the red patterned wallpaper covered walls. The table clothes were white with a golden pattern embroidered on them. The restaurant was surrounded with the upper class citizens of Republic city, this was not a place Korra belonged in.

"So, you're new in town I hear." Tai said with a smile, trying to start up a conversation.

"Ya, I am." Korra said dryly. Half looking back at him, half still staring out, waiting for her dinner.

Tai moved his hand over the table somewhat and closer to a bowl of bread. "So you've mastered three of the four elements, impressive."

"You seem to know a lot about me, were you at the rally?" Korra said fully looking back at him now.

"Kinda. I wasn't a spectator, though. I was apart of your security detail."  Tai said with a low-toned laugh.

"Security, detail. But I'm the Avatar, who would want to hurt me!" Korra pointed to her chest with both hands, in disbelief.

"Keep it down." Tai shakes his head. "You're the avatar. Triad, the equalists, you name it. We also had to protect you from your fans." Tai took a sip of his tea.

"Fans, I like the sound of that." Korra polishes her knuckles against her chest and leans back smiling.

"Trust me, it's not as glamorous as you think. You're the avatar, do you realize how many guys would kill to go out with you, or abuse their power to even be near you." Tai said leaning over the table.

Korra pointed at him with a smug grin on her face. "Oh, like you did."

"Told you before this isn't a date. I need to ask you a few things." Tai said in an irritated tone, looking away.

"Then ask away." Korra waved her hands up dismissively and looked away with her eyes closed.

Tai looked down at the table. "Can you teach me earthbending?"

"Wait, but your a metalbender! Don't you already know earthbending." Korra looked at him shocked, jerking forward in her chair.

"Pipe down." Tai said angrily, staring directly into her eyes.

"Oh, right." Korra pulls into herself, a bit embarrassed.

"No, I don't. My father was an earthbender but he was taught metalbending by Toph and he never went back to earthbending. Because of this all I ever learned was metalbending." Tai said and then looked down. "My father believes earthbending to be outdated, obsolete, beneath me."

"Sounds charming." Korra said sarcastically, and shook her head slightly, leaning back in her chair again.

"Don't get me, wrong. He's always been a good father to me, just not a great teacher." Tai said chipperly defending his father's good will but turning solemn and grave when the topic of his teaching came up.

"But, why me? There has to be hundreds of earthbenders in the city to learn from." Korra opened her arms wide.

"Not as many as you think, the idea that earthbending is obsolete isn't that rare," Tai looked down.
"Why learn earthbending? When you can learn metalbending and join the police force and get a good job with good pay, be able to afford eating at a place like this." Tai gestured toward the restaurant with his hand and paused. "The few teachers that do teach pure earthbending are either highly expensive, close before my shift ends or hate metalbenders, some times all three. But You're the avatar, you probably don't know what it's like to be rejected for teaching."

"You'd be surprised," Korra looked down and away slightly.

There was a silence for a few seconds. "I shouldn't have said anything" Tai thought to himself "I knew she'd rejec-"

"Fine, I'll teach you." Korra reached her arm over the table, looking at him with a bright determined look on her face.

"Really?!" Tai looked up surprised and smiling.

"On one condition. I want one of those metalbender backpacks and the know-how to use it." Korra smirked.

"Deal!" Tai grabbed her arm at the elbow tightly, and she did the same to him.

The food arrived at their table the moment their arms broke from each other. Tai had ordered a smoked salmonrat with a side salad, while Korra had ordered a sample plate filled with small cuts of all kinds of meat and vegetables. They both began eating at the same time, by the time Tai looked up from cutting his salmonrat. Korra had already eaten each of the samples and was halfway through her rice plate. Tai smiled and chuckled a bit, as Korra continued eating.

                                          ---

After they finish dinner, Tai walked Korra out to the front of the restaurant there was a breeze in the air that swept down the lightly littered streets of the city. People bustling past them.

"So, What were you going to do before I picked you up?" Tai said tilting his head.

"Well, I was going to try and see a pro-bending match. Any luck they're still open?" Korra pulled her arms in close and smiled gleefully.

"Afraid not, it's likely the last fight of the night, and it be over by the time you get there." Tai said as Korra slouched down in disappointment.

"Great, Tenzin's going to grill me more than my diner."

"What if, you were assisting in a police investigation?"  Tai looked over toward her slyly.

"You'd lie for me." Korra looked up with relief on her face but also but confusion.

"It wouldn't be a lie." Tai looked down at a watch on his arm. "In twenty minutes there is going to be an illegal shipment of goods entering the harbor, which is a fifteen minute walk from here. I could use some backup, Miss Korra."

"I like your style. After you, Officer Tai." Korra bowed playfully and let him lead the way.
WOOT Legend of Korra !

Edit: Did a bunch of small edits while I was re-reading it, updated it for some choice word and sentence changes which I feel help better drive the story forward/

I wrote this after my third or fifth re-watch of the preview episodes, and then did all my editing after the 10th or 11th. Needless to say I'm a bit obsessed, Korra is quickly becoming one of my favorite fictional characters.

Sorry this is a bit dialog heavy, I promise the next chapter will have more action. A full on two against many brawl in fact.

This is a divergent fic and Tai is my OC, as will be his family who you should meet in later chapters. As for Mako and Bolin fans I do love this character and they will appear if later chapters (if I ever write them), as will the equalists in a big way.

I'm still a novice writer and this to my knowledge is the first fan fic I've ever released online, though far from my first ever written. If you feel the need to be critical please be gentle, if anyone feels out of character so you feel I messed up a fact please fell free to correct me but double check yourself first cause If I am right and you say I'm wrong I will correct you.
